East Texas libraries hosting summer reading programs

To avoid the "summer slide," libraries in Tyler, Longview and Nacogdoches are offering free reading programs over summer break.

LONGVIEW, Texas — Libraries across East Texas are hosting summer reading programs and events to keep students engaged while they are out of school for summer break. 

Tyler: The Tyler Public Library's Summer Reading Challenge will run from June 3 to July 26 and is open to children and adults of all ages.

Lindale: Lillie Russell Memorial Library's 2024 Summer Reading Program will run from June 11 to July 4 and is open to for children. Several reading times and activities are scheduled throughout summer to promote literature.

Longview: The Longview Public Library's 2024 Summer Reading Club will run from June 10 to July 24 for children 17 and under. Participants can register online or in-person.

Nacogdoches: The Nacogdoches Public Library's Adventure Begins at Your Library event will run from June 1 to Aug. 3 for children and adults of all ages. 

Rusk: The Rusk County Library System's Adventure Begins at Your Library event will run from June 4 to July 26 for children and adults of all ages. Participants can register online.

Whitehouse: The Whitehouse Community Library's Summer Reading Program will run from June 1 to July 31. 

According to the Nacogdoches Public Library, studies show children who read during the summer generally maintain the skills they've gained while in school, and children who see their parents read or read with their parents generally score higher on standardized tests.
