Salvation Army of Tyler collecting school supplies to help families in need

TYLER, Texas — The Salvation Army of Tyler is seeking school supplies to help families in need ahead of back-to-school season.

The nonprofit said the extensive list of needed classroom supplies can be very expensive, especially when the cost of clothes, shoes and backpacks are added in. The cost is heightened for families who have multiple school-age children.

“Returning to school should be a fun and exciting time for our young people. However, it can so easily become a nervous and sometimes embarrassing time for those kids who perhaps do not have all the essential supplies for that all-important first day of class,” said Salvation Army of Tyler Capt. Jeremy S. Walker “The Salvation Army is working to make sure that students from our community have everything they need to go back to school and we’re asking the community to come alongside us to help.”

The list of supplies includes:

  • Spiral notebooks
  • Two-pocket folders
  • Erasers
  • Supply boxes
  • Clear plastic rulers
  • Colored pencil
  • Composition notebooks
  • Ballpoint ink pens
  • Highlighters
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors\
  • Pencils
  • Backpacks
  • And more

Donations can be dropped off at The Salvation Army in Tyler, located at 633 N. Broadway Ave.  Supplies can also be purchased by going to the Salvation Army's website at southernusa.salvationarmy.org/tyler. Those interested can find the tab, “Donate School Supplies,” to be directed to an online registry at Walmart. These items from the Walmart registry are shipped to the Salvation Army at no cost.

“We’ve seen first-hand how important it is for kids to get off to a good start in the school year,” Walker said. "And your generosity and care can be the encouragement and practical help they need to make the best start possible. Thank you for your support!”
