LONGVIEW, Texas — Almost 30 East Texans urged Longview City Council members Thursday to implement three proposed animal welfare ordinances to curb the city’s growing pet overpopulation problem.
Animal welfare activists, animal rescuers, residents who’ve had encounters with loose dogs and more spoke during Thursday’s council meeting, saying they support ordinances that would promote the spaying and neutering of animals, require them to be implanted with a microchip and reduce the frequency of required rabies vaccinations.
No members of the public spoke against the proposed ordinances, though some suggested making minor changes them. The majority of the speakers voiced concerns about public safety, and rescue operators said they’re struggling to care for the large number of animals that continue to flood shelters and rescues throughout the region.
