KANSAS CITY, Mo. — According to Ian Rapaport, National Insider for the NFL Network, Whitehouse High School alum turned Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is expected to miss at least three weeks after suffering a patellar (kneecap) dislocation of his right knee in Thursday night's game against the Denver Broncos.

Patellar dislocations occur with significant regularity, especially in younger athletes, with most of the dislocations occurring laterally (outside), according to the UCONN Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. When these happen, they are associated with significant pain and swelling. Following a patellar dislocation, the first step must be to relocate the kneecap into the trochlear groove. This often happens spontaneously as the individual extends the knee.
Rapaport reports Mahomes will have an MRI on Friday which will determine if there is ligament damage and if he needs more than three weeks to recover.
The Chiefs' next three games include:
- October 27 - Green Bay Packers
- November 3 - Minnesota Vikings
- November 10 - @ Tennessee Titans
Mahomes stayed down on the field for quite some time after picking up a first down on a fourth-and-short quarterback sneak in the second quarter. He was helped off the field by the training staff and taken to the locker room. Backup Matt Moore took over for the remainder of the game.
The reigning NFL MVP has thrown 15 touchdowns and one interception this season.
