TYLER, Texas — Following the reelection of now President-elect Donald Trump, U.S. Rep. Nathaniel Moran, who represents most of East Texas in U.S. Congress, said he's looking forward to seeing the border secured, reduced debt and more strength in the White House.
Moran said the reason East Texans and others across the country voted for Trump was due to the policies of President Joe Biden's administration.
"We need to change the policies of the last four years that we've seen under the Biden administration," Moran said. "There is so much that needs to happen and so quickly to reverse the travesty of the last four years," Moran said. "The people of East Texas knew that needed to happen. They came out with votes across the board to make sure that we sent a signal."
He emphasized the need for border security along the southern border and having a strong leader in the White House.
"Those are things that not just the communities in Texas recognize, but communities across the heartland and on each coast recognize," Moran said. "We need to restore prosperity, liberty, democracy, the rule of law. We need to ensure that this nation turns a corner from what we've seen the past four years. It is going to be a great celebration come January."
Looking ahead to January, Moran is offering a limited number of tickets to the presidential inauguration happening on Jan. 20. Those who are interested can go to moran.house.gov for more information. He said not every request can be granted, but he'd love for Texas to have a full-out showing at the inauguration.
Regarding the Senate race in Texas, Moran said U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz winning his third term shows that Texas isn't becoming blue or purple, but the state remains red.
"And it's because of the failed policies of the Biden administration on the left the last four years, and the successful policies that we know are to come and were present during President Trump's first presidential term," Moran said.
Moran said that so far, Trump has made some "stellar choices" for his cabinet picks as incoming president, such as former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for US ambassador to Israel and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem for Homeland Security secretary.
"Gov. Noem is going to be strong for the Department of Homeland Security, and Gov. Huckabee, he's been a great voice for Israel for a number of years. He's going to ensure that when we get to Middle East issues, that we have a very strong and steady hand at the table to make sure that we stand with our ally Israel," Moran said. "We want peace and stability and prosperity in the Middle East, generally, for everybody. But that means we got to stand with our ally Israel and to make it known that if there are sides to take, we are on the side of Israel."
Before U.S. Sen. John Thune, of South Dakota, was named the next Senate majority leader, Moran said that no matter who the leader is, it's important for the House to work well with the Senate. Thune will take over the spot in January after Mitch McConnell, who has decided to step down from the position.
"That's been a problem for the Republicans in the past couple of years is we have not had unity of action," Moran said. "We don't need uniformity of thought, but we certainly need unity of action to push back against the left and the failed policies of the Biden administration."
Moran, who ran unopposed to be elected to his second term, said he's grateful and humbled to serve in Congress another two years. He called the experience "the opportunity of a lifetime" to serve the community he grew up in.
Some of his priorities for this upcoming legislative session are securing the border, extending tax cuts and restoring America's energy independence.
