Protecting your home with flood insurance

Co-owner of SERVPRO, Lee Browning, says most homes they fix rarely have insurance.

EAST TEXAS, Pa. — Having flood insurance could be a lifesaver if your home ever floods. With the larger amount of rainfall in East Texas, there is always the possibility of your home flooding.

Homeowners and renter’s insurance does not protect your home from flood damage. If you want to make sure your home is covered, you specifically need flood insurance.

“Flood damage is covered through FEMA, which is the government and that's rising water," Tyler State Farm agent, Jimmie Bergman, said. "Your home is going to protect you from a tree falling on your house and rainwater getting in that sort of thing.”

Once you buy flood insurance, it takes thirty days to kick in. This means you cannot purchase the insurance just because a storm is approaching.

Co-owner of SERVPRO, Lee Browning, says most homes they fix rarely have insurance.

“We don’t run into a lot of houses that have flood insurance. Most of our customers do not have flooding coverage” Browning said.

If you have any interest in getting flood insurance, you can reach out to most insurance agencies for coverage.
