Proposed downtown Longview parking facility would be built 'for next 50 to 100 years'

Commissioners are asking residents to settle the matter during a Nov. 7 election to determine whether the county may borrow up to $19 million to build a garage.

LONGVIEW, Texas — Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt says he believes debt for a downtown Longview parking facility could be paid off in five years.

After years of disagreements about the best way to address a parking shortage at the Gregg County Courthouse, commissioners are asking residents to finally settle the matter during a Nov. 7 election to determine whether the county may borrow up to $19 million to build a parking facility.

"The court voted unanimously after months, years of kicking the can down the road and discussing it and arguing about which way to do it," Stoudt said. "We finally said let's give it to voters."
