The suspect who was involved in a shooting and later a police pursuit that ended in Lufkin Tuesday afternoon has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a report from the Office of Attorney General.
According to the report, the suspect, who was identified as Mason West, 21, was wanted for an attempted murder in Angelina County. When officers saw a vehicle and ran the license plate, they identified it as West's vehicle.
Officers activated their emergency lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but West fled and caused a pursuit. West turned onto Melvin Street in Lufkin and stopped his vehicle in the 100 block. He jumped out and fled on foot. Officers chased West and he ran into the front door of a residence, the report stated.
The residents of the home told the officers that West shot himself in their backyard. Officers performed first aid until paramedics arrived and took West to a local hospital, police said.
West was later pronounced dead at the hospital. He was identified as the suspect in the attempted murder of a male in Angelina County just prior to the pursuit by Lufkin police officers.
The Lufkin Police Department contacted the Texas Rangers to assist with the investigation.
