Police: East Texas teen killed at Mardi Gras parade shot by teen while 'horseplaying'

Police told KTBS witnesses said the group of friends started to "horseplay," chasing each other around a vehicle with plastic swords.

ELYSIAN FIELDS, Texas — Police say an East Texas teen who was killed at a Shreveport Mardi Gras parade was shot by another teen while "horseplaying" with a group Saturday evening, according to KTBS in Shreveport.

Elysian Fields High School junior Kip Lewis, 17, of Marshall, was shot around 5:45 p.m., near Clyde Fant Memorial Parkway during a parade Saturday. KTBS reported Lewis died the same day at a Shreveport-area hospital, the Shreveport station said.

KTBS said a 16-year-old was questioned in connection with Lewis' death, which was labeled a homicide. The police statement did not specifically state if an arrest has been made.

According to the station, Lewis was shot in the upper body while he and friends from Texas were attending the Krewe of Gemini parade. They were in an area reserved for families in front of Magnolia School of Excellence located on Clyde Fant Parkway Service Road.

Police told KTBS that witnesses said the group of friends started to "horseplay," chasing each other around a vehicle with plastic swords. Then, the 16-year-old got a handgun and a single shot was fired, which struck Lewis.

Lewis later died at the hospital. Police said two shootings happened along the parade route, and the second was somewhere along Shreveport-Barksdale Highway, KTBS said.

Mayor Tom Arceneaux gave a statement saying the incidents are "unfortunate." He gave his sympathy to Lewis' family and friends, according to KTBS.

Elysian Fields ISD announced Lewis' funeral will be this Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Elysian Fields High School auditorium.

EFISD said all campuses will be closed for the day Thursday to allow any students and staff to attend the services.

"Please join with us as we continue to keep the Lewis family in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you," Elysian Fields said in a statement.

He is the son of Bradley and Lorie Lewis, and brother of EFHS graduates Makenna and Hannah. Bradley is a board member for EFISD Board of Trustees and Lorie is a longtime second-grade teacher at Elysian Fields Elementary School.
