Pine Tree ISD says no 'immediate threat' to district after rumors spread on social media

Pine Tree ISD said they identified a student as the source of rumors of a potential threat to public schools in PTISD and found there was no threat to the district.

LONGVIEW, Texas — Pine Tree ISD in Longview addressed rumors about a potential threat to the district spread online Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Pine Tree ISD said they have identified a student as the source of rumors of a potential threat to public schools in PTISD and found there was no "immediate threat" to the district. They said they worked closely alongside Longview Police Department to investigate rumors and identify the source of the rumors, and determined the threats have no validity.

They added that social media is playing a role in the dissemination of rumors as the school year begins.

"Additionally, some students are redistributing outdated posts, making them appear as if they are new incidents," a spokesperson for PTISD said. "Sharing false information creates unnecessary stress, causes worry, and places an undue burden on both school and police resources. We encourage you to speak with your children about the importance of addressing concerns appropriately."

Students with concerns are encouraged to speak directly with an administrator or a school resource officer rather than turning to social media, PTISD said.

"Social media is not the right platform for resolving these matters," they added. "Please be assured, there is no immediate threat to the safety of any Pine Tree campuses."
