Phishing attack targets UT Tyler students

Students received an email with the subject line, UT Tyler Posting: Freelance Opportunity with $500 Weekly Pay from the "Emergency Engagement Team at Direct Relief"

TYLER, Texas — The University of Texas at Tyler has sent a notice to students warning of a phishing attack.

On April 16, students received an email with the subject line "UT Tyler Posting: Freelance Opportunity with $500 Weekly Pay" from the "Emergency Engagement Team at Direct Relief."

The email stated they could offer students $500 a week for 2-3 hours of work.

The university's Information Security department states they have already purged the email from students inboxes however, if you replied before the purge to please stop communication with the attacker.

"It is a scam intended to get you to send them money by sending you a fake check for more than the job pays, and then asking you to wire them back what they overpaid you," Director of Information Security Chris Green said in an email. "When you try to cash the check, your bank will inform you it is not a real check and you will have lost the money you sent the attacker."
