BIG SANDY, Texas — One pedestrian has been struck and killed by a vehicle while assisting students board a Big Sandy bus on the 104 bus route on Wednesday morning.
According to DPS Sergeant Adam Albritton, officials responded around 6:30 a.m. to reports of a pedestrian crash on State Highway 155 south of Mulberry Road.
Albritton said an woman was assisting a student across the road using a flashlight when a pickup driver disregarded the safety lights from the school bus and struck the woman.
The woman was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Albritton.
Officials reported that no additional students were injured.
The suspected driver has been identified as Jimmy Lee Hewitt and is charged with manslaughter and has been transported to the Upshur County Jail, according to jail reports.
At this time, the district will be providing counseling for students and staff that have been affected by this difficult time.
