OVERTON, Texas — Overton ISD is asking for prayers after a beloved high school football player was injured in a "serious accident."
The district says Cristian "Macho" Rodriguez underwent surgery after being involved in a one-vehicle crash after leaving his girlfriend's house.
OISD says Rodriguez was discovered about an hour after the wreck occurred. He was flown to Tyler for surgery.
"Because of how severely damaged his spine was, his neurosurgeon recommended immediate surgery so that’s what was done," OISD said in a social media post based on information from Rodriguez's family. "It was successful in so many ways but it’s not a complete fix. By no means is he out of the woods. Cristian has a long road and many speed bumps ahead. Fortunately, he did have a weak signal that was detected from his feet to his brain immediately after surgery."
The district is asking for prayers for the teen.
A prayer circle was held in the Overton High School library Sunday where attendees also made cards to send to him.
The family is asking for no visitors at this time because Rodriguez needs rest and cannot afford to get sick.
