TYLER, Texas — East Texans are preparing for the dramatic change in weather as a cold snap is set to make its way into the Piney Woods. At the same time, volunteers are working together to help those without a home stay warm.
The Tyler Street Team has supplies like gloves, beanies and hand warmers ready to hand out to make sure people who live outside are prepared. Shana Yeatts with the organization said their team has the passion and understanding to continue their efforts.
"Once you start helping them and peeling away the layers and become their friend, then you realize that it's not always a fault of theirs," Yeatts said. "And sometimes even if it is a fault of theirs, being a friend can sometimes lead to getting them the appropriate help."
On Thursday, The Salvation Army said its staff is also prepared to keep people warm with their shelter. But, for those who have a criminal trespass violation at the shelter, they suggest calling ahead before arriving as they will consider who gets to stay on a case-by-case basis. If you’re not allowed, the Tyler Street Team said they’ll do their best to help.
"All we would ask that you have them write something on Salvation Army letterhead and sign it that says you're not allowed to be in Salvation Army," Yeatts said. "We will be out there on the streets and spreading the word, letting those people know that we we are not going to let anyone freeze."
If you’re in need of a blanket, then the nonprofit PATH said you can stop by their facility Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to get one. The organization wants to remind those looking to get a blanket that their offices will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day this coming Monday.
The Tyler Street Team said they will make their best efforts to ensure no one sleeps in the cold. Those in need can call their hotline at (903) 253-0301 for assistance.
