Officials: Cherokee County Jail inmate dies after experiencing medical issues

Sheriff Brent Dickson has requested the Texas Rangers and the Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Unit to perform an independent investigation.

RUSK, Texas — A Cherokee County inmate has died after experiencing medical issues in the jail, according to the sheriff's office.

In a news release, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said the inmate, who has been identified as Aiydasani Bryant, 21, of Jacksonville, was complaining of medical issues Tuesday.

EMS responded and it appeared Bryant had gone into cardiac arrest. First responders and jail staff used life-saving measures and she was taken to the hospital, where she later died, the sheriff's office said.

Bryant was in the Cherokee County Jail on a $100,000 bond after the Jacksonville Police Department arrested her on a charge of aggravated assault (family violence) with a deadly weapon.

Sheriff Brent Dickson has requested the Texas Rangers and the Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Unit to perform an independent investigation, which is common for all in-custody deaths.
