Nonprofit aims to help undocumented youth navigate higher education

Her experiences in higher education have led her to start a nonprofit to help undocumented students.

TYLER, Texas — For Tyler Legacy High School alumni Andrea Valdez, going to college did not seem like a possibility.

As a high school senior, she saw her peers talk excitedly about the schools they would attend. However, she worried about the cost and whether they would accept her because she is undocumented.

Now, the 20-year-old Tyler resident is entering her senior year at UT Tyler after completing her first year as a transfer student, becoming junior senator and competing in Model United Nations. Her experiences in higher education have led her to start a nonprofit to help undocumented students.
