TYLER, Texas — This year is a leap year, so there’s an extra day on the calendar to spend doing whatever you choose, and some couples in East Texas made the most of it.
Smith County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Derrick Choice had a busy day filled with multiple weddings starting in the morning and stretching into the afternoon.
"It’s leap day, and for some reason people want to come out and get married on leap day," Choice said.
With all that his job entails, Choice said that weddings are always special.
"A JP has a lot of duties. Doing weddings is one of the joyous occasions," Choice said.
One of those weddings was for the new Mr. and Mrs. Toole.
"It’s just a unique way of celebrating our love for each other, to have it on a different day," said Terri Toole, who exchanged vows with her new husband, Jason, on Thursday.
Even though the Tooles' anniversary technically will only happen once every four years, they said they won't let that stop them from celebrating every year.
"We will celebrate it either the day before or the day after depending on what day it falls on, and on the leap year we’ll have just a big celebration," Terri Toole said.
Now, an already unique leap day is even more special for the newlyweds, who are happy to spend their extra day together.
"We are going to enjoy it– enjoy each others company," she said.
