TYLER — The Crescent Laundry Building located in downtown Tyler was designated a Historic Landmark Tuesday.
The Historic Preservation Board recognized the building with a Local Landmark designation.
"As you can tell there hasn't been much renovation to the exterior of this so you really still get the character of what it felt like when people walk through the doors back when it was the Crescent Laundry," Amber Rojas, Historic Preservation Office and Main Street manager, said.
The former Crescent Laundry Company started in 1923 on East Erwin Street by Walter P. Jones, according to Smith County.
The company moved into the building when it was newly constructed in 1927.
It was the first and largest dry cleaning company in Smith County operating from 1923 to 2000.
"If we can keep the integrity of some of our buildings that were there since the '20s that's just great," JoAnn Hampton, Smith County Commission of Precinct Four, said.
Smith County purchased the building in 2008 as part of master plan create a downtown campus of county employees and services.
The site now houses the Facility Services Department, Constable Precinct 1 Bobby Garmon's Office and the Animal Shelter.
