MARSHALL, Texas — A woman is dead and a child was injured after being struck by a vehicle following a fight involving multiple women in Marshall.
According to the Marshall Police Department, officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the 100 block of Martindale around 10 p.m., on Sunday.
When police arrived on scene, they discovered an ongoing altercation between several females and a disturbance involving about 40 people.
"Tragically, one of the women, later identified as 23-year-old Derkyla Ford, was found underneath a vehicle, along with her injured 5-year-old son nearby," the MPD said. Her son was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the incident."
Police say Samantha Johnson, 22, was driving the vehicle that struck Ford and her child. She was arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and injury to a child with intent. She was booked into the Harrison County Jail.
"The Marshall Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident," the MPD said. "Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Marshall Police Department’s non-emergency line at 903-935-4575.
