Missing boater found dead on Sabine River along Smith, Wood county line

Identification of the boater is pending until his next of kin is notified. The incident remains under investigation.

WOOD COUNTY, Texas — A missing boater was found dead Wednesday morning on the Sabine River. 

Game Warden Capt. Derrick Spitzer said the man was reported missing Monday around 5 p.m. He was dropped off near Highway 14 in Hawkins and was going to State Highway 155 in Big Sandy, but he never showed up. 

Game wardens found his boat Monday night. He was located deceased Wednesday morning somewhere between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on the river along the Smith and Wood County line, Spitzer said.

Smith, Wood, Upshur and Gregg County Game Wardens all assisted with the search and recovery efforts. 

Identification of the boater is pending until his next of kin is notified. The incident remains under investigation, Spitzer said.
