Marshall Police Department raises awareness of hit-and-run incidents

The police department has investigated two hit-and-run cases this week and has received over 40 hit-and-run reports this year.

MARSHALL, Texas — The Marshall Police Department is reminding citizens of the penalties associated with hit-and-run incidents.

"Leaving the scene of an accident isn't just illegal -- it's a serious issue of safety and responsibility. Texas law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop, exchange information, and assist anyone who may be injured," the police department said in a recent Facebook post.

The message reminded readers that leaving a scene that involves over $200 worth of property damage is considered a Class B misdemeanor and is punishable by up to six months behind bars and a $2,000 fine. If an injury or death occurs, leaving the scene is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Drivers who leave but are later identified may be given the option to accept responsibility by voluntarily appearing at the Marshall Police Department.

Per the post, this could result in "a reduced charge, a ticket, and a fine instead of jail time."
