Man accused of threatening to kill Smith County sheriff, East Texas district attorneys on podcast arrested

Gary Treadwell said a holiday was coming up and all three of the officials would be together. He said he would be their executioner, the affidavit read.

TYLER, Texas — Documents allege a Flint man said on his podcast he planned to kill Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith and two East Texas district attorneys.

Gary Lynn Treadwell, 64, was arrested on May 21 on three counts of obstruction or retaliation. He was transferred on May 31 to the Gregg County Jail, where he remains on bonds totaling $750,000.

According to an arrest affidavit, Treadwell on May 19 made statements on his podcast saying he was going to kill Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith, Smith County District Attorney Jacob Putman and Henderson County District Attorney Jenny Palmer. The podcast aired from his home.

An investigator listened to the podcast and found that Treadwell said, "put them into a room and he would kill them," in reference to Smith, Putman and Palmer. In one recording, Treadwell said a holiday was coming up and all three of the officials would be together. He said he would be their executioner, according to the document.

Treadwell was heard saying when the three of them are together he will take care of them. He also said he planned to set a trap for them, the affidavit said.

His bond conditions say he cannot go within 500 feet of Putman, Smith or Palmer or their families, their residences, and schools or businesses where they be. Treadwell is also not allowed to communicate in writing by phone directly or indirectly with the officials or their families.
