Lufkin ISD trustees officially names superintendent

Dr. James Hockenberry, who was the Longview ISD assistant superintendent for district services, will have his first day on Wednesday.

LUFKIN, Texas — Lufkin ISD trustees officially named Dr. James Hockenberry to the position of superintendent Monday evening.

Hockenberry, who was the Longview ISD assistant superintendent for district services, will have his first day on Wednesday. There will be a meet-and-greet for Hockenberry on Sunday, May 5, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the new Lufkin Middle School campus on Tulane Ave.

The decision was made after a 21-day waiting period passed.

He was at Longview ISD since January 2020. He was previously superintendent in two school districts, Center and Chireno ISDs, for 14 years. Before those positions, he was a principal, assistant principal and science teacher.

According to the school district, his first three days will include visits to campuses to meet staff and students and attend community events.

“It’s going to be fun,” Hockenberry said. “Let’s get to work.”

The district said Hockenberry is well-respected for his work as a mentor and presenter. He believes that all students can learn at high levels.

“Lufkin ISD is considered the premier school district in East Texas,” Hockenberry said. “I appreciate the board’s trust in me for the opportunity to serve the students, staff and community of Lufkin. My wife and I are eager to experience and witness the remarkable pride displayed here. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to establish further the school system they desire, which is in students’ best interest as they prepare for their future.”
