Lufkin ISD appealing realignment due to distance of new district

Their appeal hearing will take place Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 9 a.m., in Austin.

LUFKIN, Texas — Lufkin ISD will get the chance to appeal their redistricting on Tuesday in front of the UIL.

The district is appealing their new football grouping due to the distance from the other schools. Their hearing will take place Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 9 a.m., in Austin.

Currently, Lufkin ISD has been grouped in 5A-DI, District 7 with:

  • Burleson Centennial (3 hrs. and 26 mins. away)
  • Cleburne (3 hrs. and 25 mins. away)
  • Highland Park (3 hrs. and 5 mins. away)
  • Joshua (3 hrs. and 33 mins. away)
  • Midlothian (2 hrs. and 54 mins. away)
  • Red Oak (2 hrs. and 55 mins. away)
  • Tyler (1 hr. and 41 mins. away)

The district is appealing to join 5A-DI, District 9, which includes:

  • Angleton
  • Baytown Sterling
  • Beaumont United
  • Beaumont West Brook
  • Galveston Ball
  • Mt. Belvieu Barbers Hill
  • Port Arthur Memorial

According to the UIL, a school district has two opportunities to appeal its district assignment.

"The first level of appeal involves the local district executive committees (DECs)," the UIL said. "Schools wishing to change districts may do so by getting a majority vote from both the DEC to which they have been assigned and the DEC to which they wish to be assigned."

The UIL says the second level of appeal only applies to districts who didn't receive the desired outcome from the first level appeal.

"The Chair of the UIL Legislative Council shall appoint the UIL DAAC members," the UIL said. "A participant school may request an appeal of the district assignment, after unsuccessfully attempting to acquire the first level appeal, by filing its request and a supporting statement with the UIL DAAC and informing, in writing, the superintendent and principal of the schools in the conference and district to which it was assigned and notifying the superintendent and principal of the schools in the conference and district to which it wishes to be assigned."
