Longview man dies after jumping off pontoon boat on Lake Cherokee

Troy Schaap was pronounced dead by Rusk County Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Cindy Redmon.

RUSK COUNTY, Texas — A Longview man has died after jumping from a boat on Lake Cherokee over the weekend.

According to Rusk County Sheriff Johnwayne Valdez, the Rusk County Sheriff's Office was called to the Rusk County side of Lake Cherokee around 7:50 p.m. on Sunday, after Troy Schaap, 58, reportedly jumped from a pontoon boat near Bikini Island.

Sheriff Valdez says witnesses explained Schaap jumped into water that was about 6' deep and resurfaced. When the boat parked, they realized Schapp never made it to shore. They then discovered Schapp's body.

CPR was performed by witnesses until paramedics could get to the scene. Schapp was pronounced dead by Rusk County Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Cindy Redmon.

The Longview News-Journal reports Schapp, senior vice president at RBC Wealth Management, was the treasurer of the LEDCO board and previously served as president of the prospectors at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview.
