LONGVIEW, Texas — Longview ISD is preparing to purchase 20 electric school buses after securing two federal grants totaling $7.3 million, solidifying East Texas’ status as a state leader in school bus electrification.
Kilgore ISD already operates four electric school buses financed through federal grants, while Martinsville ISD, east of Nacogdoches, made headlines last year by becoming the first district in the state to go all-electric. Tatum ISD was awarded grants in 2023 to purchase six electric school buses.
The grants come from the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean School Bus Program, which received $5 billion from the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law to replace diesel school buses with cleaner alternatives.
