LONGVIEW, Texas — Longview city leaders invited residents to review designs for renovations to the Broughton Park Recreation Center Tuesday.
While the center is not in bad shape, however, there is a need for more space for the community.
"What happened yesterday was an opportunity for the community to come in and see some of the thoughts and designs for what possibly the new facility would look like," Wray Wade, District 3 Councilman in Longview, said.
Wanda Williams has worked as the Recreation Coordinator at Broughton Recreation Center for 20 years. She says the coming renovations are overdue.
"This building is like, I said 41 years old, and this is a time for an upgrade," Williams explained.
The recreation center is roughly 14,000 square feet. However, the proposed renovation would double the facility's size. Among the additions would be a new gymnasium in a new building with a walkway connecting the two structures.
City spokesman Shawn Hara says there are more renovations in the works.
"This project includes more than just the building, it's also the entire park. [The city plans on] doing some renovations there as well: Expanding the trail [and] doing some overall upgrades to the whole facility."
The designs could possibly be changed before they start building in the fall of 2020.
The goal is to have all the additions and renovations finished by the fall of 2021.
