Longview animal shelter committee discusses spay-neuter ordinance, microchip requirements

The committee is scheduled to conduct two more meetings before making recommendations to the City Council about changes the city should consider implementing.

LONGVIEW, Texas — Community members and the Longview Animal Shelter Advisory Committee discussed potential solutions Tuesday evening to the city’s growing problem with loose and stray animals.

But no matter what actions the committee may eventually recommend to the Longview City Council, the problem begins with irresponsible pet owners, committee and community members said.

Committee members discussed three main solutions: requiring residents to put microchips in their animals to allow them to be identified and returned to their owners if they run away; requiring city residents to spay and neuter their animals as a way to reduce the population of strays; and hiring another animal control officer to respond to emergencies.
