East Texas newspaper closes its doors after 124 years

The front-page story from the newspaper cited a lack of funds for shutting down.

LINDALE, Texas — The Lindale News & Times announced its closure after 124 years of printing.

In an article titled "Hometown newspaper closing doors," the Lindale News & Times, which was founded in 1900,  announced that it would be shutting down. The front-page story from the newspaper cited a lack of funds for its closure.

Jim Bardwell was the publisher of the Lindale News & Times, The Gladewater Mirror and The Big Sandy & Hawkins Journal and previously owned the White Oak Independent. He wrote the article announcing the closure of the newspaper.

"My late wife Suzanne, who died in a car wreck in 2022 and had taught at White Oak schools for 20 years, saved the paper when the previous owners retired and were going to close it," Bardwell wrote. "We ran it for many years. But after losing money for five years straight I chose to shut it down. But they still deserved to have their people informed about their local government and schools, so we do that by merging it into our Gladewater newspaper."

"It's important for residents to be informed," Bardwell added. "It was important to Suzanne and it's important to me."

Founded in 1900, the Lindale News & Times provided the Lindale area with current news about its school, city and county as well as civic events, described by the Lindale Chamber of Commerce as the newspaper of record for the city of Lindale.

"For 124 years the News & Times (by one name or another) has shared good news and bad. We have announced the happy news of births of generations of Lindale children and shared the sorrowful news of local men and women passings," Bardwell wrote. "For more than a century we have been the watchdog on your tax dollars – explaining where and why the city, school and county were spending your hard earned dollar."
