Law enforcement searching for person accused of stealing Cherokee County dump truck, evading arrest

CCSO said they believe the suspect jumped from the vehicle as the brakes caught fire and ran into the woods.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas — Law enforcement is searching for a person accused of stealing a Cherokee County dump truck and running into the woods on Tuesday.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, a report was made around 9 a.m. Tuesday that a Mack dump truck, which belongs to the Cherokee County Pct .4 Road and Bridge Department, was stolen from Cherokee County Road 4211. The vehicle was stolen while road and bridge crews were working in the area.

Cherokee County deputies found the stolen dump truck on Mixon Road and State Highway 110 in Smith County near the Whitehouse Volunteer Fire Department. The suspect didn't release the dump truck air brakes, causing the tires to catch fire, the sheriff's office said.

CCSO said they believe the suspect jumped from the vehicle as the brakes caught fire and ran into the woods. Officials have not been able to find the suspect at this time.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice K-9 Unit helped in searching the area. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division will continue to investigate.
