KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs announced the team has started an emergency response fund following Wednesday's mass shooting at the Super Bowl rally in Kansas City.
The shooting left a mother of two dead and 22 people injured by gunfire when shots erupted amid fans gathered at a rally celebrating the Chiefs. As of Friday, two juveniles have been charged with crimes connected to the mass shooting, accoriding to the Associated Press.
The Chiefs partnered with the United Way Greater Kansas City to create the KC Strong fund to support the community and its efforts to heal from the tragedy.
Quarterback and Whitehouse native Patrick Mahomes said on X the funds will go toward supporting victims and their families, violence prevention and mental health services and first responders.
"Just like #ChiefsKingdom has always been there for me and my family, we want to be there for them," Mahomes said.
He asked people to join his wife Brittany and the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation to support and donate if people are able to do so. Donations can be made here.
The description of the fundraiser states the Chiefs and their fans were expecting to celebrate a day of triumph, but instead Feb. 14 will be remembered for the tragedy.
"This moment is an opportunity to turn our collective outrage into action. This is why together, the Chiefs and United Way are creating a special emergency fund to support our community in its efforts to heal and become more resilient in the wake of these horrific events," the description reads.
So far, more than $280,000 has been raised in the KC Strong fundraiser.
