HENDERSON, Texas — A Juneteenth Freedom Day parade and celebration will be held this Saturday in Henderson.
The parade line-up will begin at 9 a.m. with the parade starting at 10 a.m. at Yates Park. The route will then travel east on East Main Street, north on Marshall Street, east down Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. to Broadway Street, down Dallas Street and ends at Yates Park.
Juneteenth, which became a federal holiday in 2021, honors the emancipation of enslaved people and the ending of slavery in 1865. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to mark when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally came to Texas on June 19, 1865.
Special guest Volton Wright, of Shreveport, will be in attendance. Other activities include games, live music, popcorn and a bounce house. There will also be free food. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs.
The celebration concludes at 5 p.m.
