TEXAS, USA — Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday is officially observed on June 19, marking the day Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.
Several organizations in East Texas will be celebrating Juneteenth next week.
TYLER:
- Juneteenth Association of Tyler Parade: June 15, 9 a.m. Parade begins on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Tyler and ends at Woldert Park.
- Texas African American Museum's Juneteenth Celebration: June 19, 10 a.m. at the Texas African American Museum in Tyler.
- Gospel Praise Fest: June 14, 6:30 p.m. at College Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Tyler.
LONGVIEW:
- Juneteenth Parade: June 15, 10 a.m. Parade begins on Ryder Street in Longview and ends at Broughton Recreation Center.
- Juneteenth Celebration Gala: June 15, 8 p.m. Hosted at the Hilton Garden Inn Longview.
- Juneteenth Comedy Extravaganza: June 15, 8:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) Hosted at the Longview Community Center.
- Longview Juneteenth Rodeo: June 29, 10 a.m. Held at the Longview Fairgrounds.
HENDERSON:
- Juneteenth Freedom Day: June 15, 9 a.m. at Yates park in Henderson. Parade begins at 10 a.m.
NACOGDOCHES:
- Juneteenth Celebration 2023: June 15, 10 a.m. Parade begins at Thomas J. Rusk Elementary School and ends at Festival Park.
LUFKIN:
- Juneteenth Association's Summer Celebration of Culture: June 15, 10 a.m. at the Brandon Community Center.
MOUNT PLEASANT:
- Oaklawn Juneteenth Celebration: June 14, 1 p.m. at the Oaklawn Park.
