TYLER, Texas — W.E. Winters Park on the northside of Tyler will be getting some significant upgrades, including an expansion of Legacy Trail and adding pollinator gardens and pocket play sites.
On Wednesday, the Tyler City Council approved a design plan for the park, located at 910 S. Peach Ave., near Peete Elementary School.
The plan costs $64,600 and the services will include surveying, detailed site, park, and utility design, all necessary permitting, identifying potential utility conflicts, coordination with utility companies and outside agencies, environmental coordination.
The park will see improvements to the playground, multipurpose courts, restrooms, pavilion, trail and parking lot. It will also have a pollinator-themed design featuring pollinator gardens, pocket play sites and a wildflower field, the city of Tyler said.
Another big feature coming is the popular Legacy Trail will soon reach Winters Park. Construction will start this fall for the second phase of the Legacy Trail. There will be a new trailhead starting at Stewart Park on Frankston Highway. This expansion will add a 12-foot-wide trail for hikers and bikers up to Old Noonday Road, through Winters Park and end at Peete Elementary School.
According to the city, the park project is funded through the Keep Tyler Beautiful Park Capital Improvements fund using revenue from the landfill access fee and a matching grant from the GameTime/TRAPS Statewide Program Funding Initiative.
