Human remains found in burning car in Rusk County

The remains were sent to Dallas for identification.

RUSK COUNTY, Texas — Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating after human remains were found in a burning vehicle in Rusk County.

According to the Rusk County Sheriff's Office, during the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 1, officials were called to the area of CR 4132 and CR 4135, near Miller Lake, on reports of a vehicle fire.

Once the fire was extinguished, a closer examination vehicle revealed human remains inside.

"Our investigators were called to the scene and began working with fire marshal's office," Sheriff JohnWayne Valdez said. "Assistance was requested from [the] State Fire Marshal's office, Texas Rangers and East Texas Auto Theft Task Force and they assisted with the crime scene."

The remains were sent to Dallas for identification.

"The sheriff's office is requesting that anyone that lives in the area of this vehicle fire that has video surveillance to call us if their system captured any footage of the vehicle or vehicles involved in this case," Sheriff Valdez said. "I also would ask if anyone has information of this incident to call our Criminal Investigation Unit, as well."

This is an active criminal investigation and foul play is suspected.

The RCSO is following up on leads and CBS19 will update this article as more information is released.
