Hubbard Middle School's AVID program receives national recognition

After completing a rigorous validation process, Hubbard Middle School becomes the first and only school in East Texas to be named a National AVID Demonstration School.

The school's AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination program, will serve as a model for other schools in the community and around the country as well. The purpose of the program is to help students prepare for high school and college.

"We're giving them a strong foundation, so when they go to high school, they're not worried. They're comfortable and confident taking those higher level classes," Hubbard teacher and AVID Coordinator Candace Veatch said.

The recognition is an honor bestowed on only three percent of AVID programs in the U.S.

"It means a lot to us because we have had a lot of time and effort and teaching teachers what AVID means and how to implement strategies in the classroom," Veatch said, "Now we've not only taken what's going on in our AVID elective classes, but we're using them school wide. So that way, all students benefit from the strategies."

Students in the AVID program are encouraged to participate in study groups, classroom discussions and advanced note taking. Teachers say it teaches kids critical thinking skills, which can be applied in the classroom and out in the real world as well.

"They go through and learn how to develop questions and ultimately they can summarize that information using it as a study guide to help prepare them for those higher level classes," Veatch said, "It gives students a chance to really thrive and find a sense of belonging, a place where they can showcase their talents."
