GILMER — The 70 year drought is over for the passing of Gilmer ISD'S school bond.
On Saturday voters approved a $35,250,000 bond to build a new Gilmer High School. Only 55 percent of voters were in favor of the bond.
The high school opened in 1948 and has seen many renovations. Administrators say the new school will be built to fit the current needs and growth of students.
The bond will raise property taxes, 24 cents for every 100 thousand dollars a home is valued.
Several people against the bond say it has divided the city and will hurt families in the long term. People in favor of the bond say it's finally time to put kids first and improve their education.
