TYLER, Texas — Poll watchers were left biting their fingernails as delays resulted in election returns rolling in later than anticipated after primary election voting closed on Tuesday.
Early voting returns, which typically are ready as soon as polls close at 7 p.m. had to be delayed due to a technical glitch with one of the polling locations. By 9:30 some returns had been updated with election day ballots, but it was unclear how many had yet to be counted.
The Smith County Elections Office said about five boxes coming from Lindale were late due to high voter turnout leaving voters who were in line to vote at 7 p.m. casting ballots well after the polls were officially closed. According to the Texas Tribune, voters in large cities across the state experienced similar waits due to increased turnout.
