Longview alum Haynes King named to Davey O'Brien Award Watch List honoring nation's best collegiate quarterback

King was one of only two Power Five conference players with at least 2,800 passing yards, 700 rushing yards, 25 touchdown passes and 10 touchdown runs in 2023.

LONGVIEW, Texas — Tell us if you've heard this one before. A former Longview Lobo is being recognized among the best players in college football.

Well, that's the story with Haynes King.

King, a former quarterback for Longview High School who's now the signal-caller at Georgia Tech, has been named to the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list. He's one of 36 quarterbacks who were named to the preseason list.

"The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award," the award website says.

The award website says players who made the watch list were selected based on previous D-I career performance, as well as expectations for the 2024 season.

"He [King] was one of only two Power Five conference players with at least 2,800 passing yards, 700 rushing yards, 25 touchdown passes and 10 touchdown runs in 2023, joining Heisman Trophy winner and eventual No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft, Jayden Daniels of LSU, while he became only the fourth Atlantic Coast Conference player since 2000 to reach those plateaus in a single season, joining Clemson’s Deshawn Watson (2015), Louisville’s Lamar Jackson (2016 and 2017) and Virginia Tech’s Jerod Evans (2016)," Georgia Tech football said.

King's name now appears on three preseason watch lists including the Maxwell Award and the East-West Shrine Bowl.

The winner of the prestigious award will be announced Monday, Feb, 17, 2024 at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

King and Georgia Tech open up their 2024 season against Florida State on Saturday, Aug. 24, in Dublin, Ireland.
