East Texas superintendent charged with DWI in connection with August crash

No injuries were reported at the time of the initial investigation, according to DPS.

HAWKINS, Texas — Hawkins ISD Superintendent Susan Morton was charged with driving while intoxicated in connection with an Aug. 23 wreck in Galveston County.

Morton was booked into the Galveston County Jail on charges of DWI and collision involving damage to a vehicle. She is no longer in jail, according to information from Galveston County Sheriff's Office records. The La Marque Police Department made the arrest.

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety crash report, Morton was driving behind two other vehicles around 8 p.m. on Aug. 23 on the southbound service road of Interstate 45 in La Marque. Both of the vehicles in front of Morton were stopped at a red light at Main Street and I-45.

DPS said Morton failed to control her speed and she collided with the car immediately in front of her. That collision caused the other car to hit the vehicle in front of it. Officials said all three collisions caused damage to each vehicle.
