Hawkins ISD board approves retirement of superintendent after recent DWI arrest, appoints interim officeholder

After accepting the retirement, board members approved Impact as the search firm that will assist Hawkins ISD in finding their next permanent superintendent.

HAWKINS, Texas — Hawkins ISD trustees on Monday approved an agreement allowing Superintendent Susan Morton to retire and named an interim superintendent.

This comes after Morton was charged with driving while intoxicated and collision involving damage to a vehicle in connection with an Aug. 23 wreck in Galveston County. Morton's vehicle left the scene of the crash and was later found in the 1900 block of Duroux Road. She was then arrested for driving while intoxicated, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

On Monday, the board met to consider Morton's voluntary retirement, which was approved after over two hours of discussion during closed executive session.

Trustees voted to name Marc Levesque as the Hawkins ISD interim superintendent. He started in his role on Tuesday and he will continue until a permanent superintendent is chosen. The board believes that will happen in January 2025.

Levesque has over 30 years of education experience. He is the retired superintendent of 21 years from Chapel Hill ISD in Mount Pleasant.

"Mr. Levesque has a wealth of knowledge and experience which will smooth our transition as we search for the next superintendent of Hawkins ISD," Board President Blake Warren said.

The Hawkins ISD board in a joint statement with Morton thanked Morton being a part of increasing standards on test scores throughout the district, designing and completing state of the art CTE building and animal barn, completing extension of band hall, and adding a visitor press box and turf field to the existing football facilities.

In that same statement, Morton thanked the past and current Board of Trustees for providing her with the opportunity to serve in the Hawkins ISD.

"A school district is measured by the commitment of the board, staff, and community to its children and their achievement. This district is indeed so committed. Mrs. Morton would like to express her heartfelt appreciation to the staff and community for their support of the District’s programs and services during her term as superintendent," the statement read.
