Inmate reportedly found unresponsive in Gregg County Jail

Officials said a jail staff assigned to the north jail facility was conducting floor walks when they found the 64-year-old inmate unresponsive in his jail cell.

GREGG COUNTY, Texas — An inmate was found unresponsive in a jail cell at the Gregg County Jail Tuesday afternoon.

According to Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano, a jail staff assigned to the north jail facility was conducting floor walks when they found the 64-year-old inmate unresponsive in his jail cell.

Jail and medical staff performed lifesaving procedures on the inmate. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Cerliano said.

Cerliano said the Sheriff's Office has notified the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. The Texas Rangers were also notified and are conducting an investigation.

At this moment, there is no evidence of foul play, Cerliano said.
