GILMER, Texas — The Upshur County Sheriff's Office is investigating a former district clerk for accusations related to the handling of county funds.
Former District Clerk Nicole Hernandez, who has since resigned from her position, is under investigation for her conduct while acting as district clerk, according to the Upshur County Sheriff's Office.
Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd contacted the sheriff's office on Thursday, which was the same day that Hernandez resigned as district clerk. Byrd asked for a criminal investigation into Hernandez’ handling of county funds.
Once the investigation is complete, the sheriff's office will turn over the results to the DA's office. On Friday, 115th District Judge Dean Fowler appointed Melissa Chevalier as the new district clerk of Upshur County.
