Former Tyler ISD student donates $100,000 to fund outdoor learning area at elementary school

Students will also get to use microscopes and other scientific tools to conduct experiments and explore the natural world around them.

TYLER, Texas — Tyler ISD's Douglas Elementary School will be getting new playground equipment and a covered outdoor learning area thanks to a donation from a former student.

Jack Benson donated $100,000 to Douglas Elementary School to turn the school's outdoor spaces into a vibrant, hands-on learning hub that will enrich the students' educational experiences, according to Tyler ISD.

Benson, who was student council president at Douglas, said he is passionate about giving back.

“I went to Douglas. It was a big part of my childhood, and I knew one day I would give back to the school, and now seemed like the right time,” Benson said.

Tyler ISD said one of the highlights of the area will be adding water access for students to explore scientific concepts related to water, ecosystems, and environmental science. Students will also use microscopes and other scientific tools to conduct experiments and explore the natural world around them.

“The vision for the outdoor learning area is to have an outdoor extension of the classroom, something I think children at any elementary grade level will benefit from,” Benson said.

He added that he didn't give the money for publicity but because he loves his school.

"I hope this encourages others to consider giving back to Tyler ISD and the school system that made them who they are today," Benson said.
