SMITH COUNTY — On Tuesday, a forensic scientist with DPS testified in a pre-trial hearing in the capital murder case against Gustavo Zavala-Garcia.
Smith County District Attorney, Matt Bingham, called Kristen Cossota to the witness stand. She testified that the majority of DNA and trace evidence has been tested.
She said the remainder of the trace evidence will be finished by the end of April.
After prosecutors review the results, the defense team will also be able to review them and have the evidence tested with an independent party.
Gustavo Zavala-Garcia is charged with the murder of 10-year-old Kayla Gomez-Orozco. Her body was found in a well on Zavala-Garcia's property in November of 2016.
The trial is set to begin the first week of October, 2018. The next pre-trial hearing is scheduled for April 26, 2018.
