Fourth of July can be a cause of stress, not celebration for some veterans

While the Fourth of July holiday is usually viewed as a celebratory time for Americans, it can be a nightmare for some who served our country.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Fourth of July is a time for people to celebrate the country's independence by lighting up the sky, but those celebrations can bring back bad memories for those that fought for the flag.

The large crowds, loud explosions and even unfamiliar settings can all impact a veteran's mental health.

University of Toledo's director of military and veteran affairs, Eric Buetikofer, recommends that people check on veterans during firework displays. He said being surrounded by family members can help veterans cope better. He also suggested veterans take extra care of themselves around this time.

"Try to get the best sleep they can, utilize breathing techniques, journaling, mindfulness and most importantly, limit alcohol intake in order to be at their best," Buetikofer said. "They should also consider using noise cancelling earbuds or headphones, they can use music or just have regular noise canceling headphones that don't have music."

In addition, he said working on desensitizing themselves to fireworks by not avoiding them, but experiencing them with family members to get used to it can also help.

As fireworks continue for the rest of the week, Buetikofer advised that people to check in with veterans they know before, during and after fireworks to make sure they are okay.

"Be aware of neighbors who may be veterans and just be conscious of the fact that what they're doing in their own backyard or down the street may be affecting those around them," said Buetikofer. "If they are going to set off fireworks in their backyard, maybe they could just let their neighbors know, just so they can put in place what coping mechanisms they need in order to be safe and in order to be comfortable during the holiday."
