The Jacksonville Fire Department identified the cause of a hotel fire that injured three firefighters Sunday afternoon.
According to the Jacksonville Fire Department, a fire broke out at Hotel RITUAL, located at 540 El Paso St., just after 1 p.m. The housekeeper, who was able to get out unharmed, was in the house at the time of the fire and called 911.
HOTEL FIRE
The information we had was that the fire was in the basement of the multi-story hotel," the JFD said in a statement. "While firefighters moved toward the basement, the fire moved between walls to the second floor."
Before firefighters were able to make it to the second floor, the ceiling of the first floor started to collapse. At this point, crews were instructed to exit the residence and attack the fire from the perimeter.
The JFD called all personnel into work from all other shifts and asked for help from several other agencies.
Upon receiving help from additional employees and other agencies, we were able to switch firefighters out so they could rehab and then continue working," the JFD said.
Crews remained on scene until 9 p.m.
"The outside structure of the hotel is mostly standing but the top two floors are mostly collapsed onto the ground level floor," the JFD said. "The chimney and staircase remained intact in the center of the hotel. This property is extremely dangerous at this time. We have taped this property off so that no one enters."
According to the JFD, the fire marshal's office believes the fire started in the basement of the hotel, due to an electrical issue.
"We have no reason to believe that this fire was intentionally caused," the JFD said.
HOUSE FIRE
Around 3:25 p.m., another fire broke out at a home in the 700 block of Austin St. while firefighters were working to extinguish the hotel blaze.
"This house fire was contained to the back porch and back laundry room," the JFD said. "It was extinguished within 30 minutes and there were no injuries or anyone inside the residence at the time of the fire."
The JFD says they do not believe the incidents were related and are investigating the cause of both fires.
INJURIES
The JFD says two firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the fires, and have since been treated and released. Another firefighter sustained major injuries and is still being evaluated.
Two bystanders were hospitalized for heat-related illnesses.
