TYLER, Texas — Families and friends gathered this past weekend to celebrate Dia del Niño, or Children's Day, at Bergfeld Park in Tyler.
While there was music, food, games and a live dance performance, families and their kids also had the opportunity to learn about important topics, such as suicide prevention. They also had the chance to interact with Tyler Police Department officers and their public safety cadets, who will be serving the citizens of Tyler in just a few years.
Julianna Calderon, vice president of Orchids of Hope, was among those in attendance. Orchids of Hope provides education and prevention for addiction, abuse and suicide.
"It's still a taboo among our community to talk about addiction or suicide. There's people that don't know where to go. We're an option," Calderon said.
Tyler Police Department cadet Alejandro Rodriguez said it feels good to lead other kids down a good path.
"Set an example for them so they can grow up to be good people," Rodriguez said.
Dia del Niño, or Children's Day, is an annual event hosted at Bergfeld Park.
