EXPLORING THE CALDWELL ZOO: How much does an elephant eat?

Keeping up with an elephant's appetite is no small task, but the keepers at the Caldwell Zoo are up for the job.

TYLER, Texas — Kara Moss, keeper of mammals, can often be found lugging tree trunks through the woods behind the Caldwell Zoo.  She does this to keep up with the goliath appetite of the zoo's elephant herd.

The zoo's elephants receive treats of elm and sweet gum trees to replicate diet of their wild counterparts.

And they love it.  Elephants receive the tree whole and scarf down everything from the leaves to the branches and the bark.

In addition to whole trees, elephants at the Caldwell Zoo consume 100 pounds of hay per day.
