TYLER, Texas — These flamingo chicks are taking baby steps to build their motor skills.
Meet Augusta, Savannah, King and Tallulah: some of the zoo's newest flamingos. All four hatched behind the scenes in the zoo's bird house. They quickly started to look to Nichole Moore, supervisor or birds, as their mama bird. And she is certainty stepping into the role.
"We have our little Flamingo playtime, which is like the best time of the day," said Moore. "We walk them so that they can help build muscles appropriately in their legs as they would normally be walking around with the parents."
The four chicks, along with zoo staff, take walks behind the scenes several times per day to help hone their motor skills.
Right now, the chicks resemble large cotton balls with long legs. As they grow, they will eventually gain the unmistakable pink hue and join the rest of the zoo's flamingos near the entrance.
